PM Prep-Segue     NATHAN’S HOT DOG EATING CONTEST NEW YORK (AP) – Judging errors cast widespread confusion over Joey “Jaws” Chestnut’s record-setting 11th title at the annual Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest. Chestnut took home the Mustard Belt after downing 74 franks and buns in 10 minutes – two more than he did last year. Second-place finisher Carmen Cincotti ate 64. But longtime announcer George Shea tells The Associated Press he noticed in real time that jurists measuring Chestnut’s and Cincotti’s intake weren’t counting from two plates stacked with franks that the eaters were drawing from. The under-counted tally was then displayed on live TV. Shea says both Chestnut and Cincotti were adamant about their scores, which were certified by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. He says new judges will be used next year.   A FRACTURED FOURTH? WASHINGTON (AP) – Usually if you hear someone talk about taking in the Fourth of July festivities in Washington D.C., it means one thing: hanging out on the national mall, watching performances by singers and bands on the West lawn of the U.S. Capitol. But this year, it could also mean watching a concert organized by the White House – set in competition with the larger gathering on the mall. If you’re going by star power, the PBS show “A Capitol Fourth” has bigger stars, including The Beach Boys, The Temptations and Chita Rivera. The […]

AM Prep-Segue   KEVIN SPACEY FACING MORE ALLEGATIONS LONDON (AP) – The investigation into Kevin Spacey’s dealings is now twice as wide as it was before. British police say they are looking into six claims of sexual assault by the Oscar-winning actor – three more than first disclosed. Earlier this year, British media reported police in London were looking into three allegations against the former “House of Cards” star. And now authorities are poring over six allegations, five involving sexual assault. Spacey has been accused of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior by numerous men since American actor Anthony Rapp alleged last year that Spacey climbed on him on a bed when Rapp was 14 and Spacey 26. In the wake of the allegations he was fired from “House of Cards” and erased from the Ridley Scott movie “All the Money in the World.”   CHESTNUT, SUDO RETAIN HOT DOG-EATING TITLES NEW YORK (AP) – You could end up feeling a lot of different ways after scarfing down 74 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes. For most of us, “good” wouldn’t be one of those feelings. But that’s how Joey Chestnut described himself after successfully defending his title at the Nathan’s Famous July 4th hot dog eating contest yesterday. He takes home the Mustard Belt for the 11th time – and set another record with 74 franks eaten. For the women, Miki Sudo chomped down 37 […]

AM Prep-Segue     JAMES WOODS DROPPED BY AGENT NEW YORK (AP) – One of Hollywood’s most outspoken conservatives says he has been dropped by his agent. And James Woods suggests it’s because of his political beliefs, including his support of President Donald Trump. Woods went on Twitter to share an email from his agent, Ken Kaplan. In the email – dated July 4 – Kaplan, in effect, declares his independence from Woods’ employ. Kaplan said in the email: “It’s the 4th of July and I’m feeling patriotic” – and added that he didn’t want to represent Woods any longer. As for why, Kaplan didn’t elaborate, saying only that “I could go on a rant but you know what I’d say.” On Wednesday, Woods fired off a series of tweets on immigration and former President Barack Obama. Woods claim Democrats are pushing the immigration issue to seize what he called “illegal votes” – and called Obama a “stain” on America.   “FIFTY SHADES” BOOKS REMOVED BY SELF-APPOINTED CENSOR BERKLEY, Mich. (AP) – Someone in the Detroit area either isn’t much of a fan of “Fifty Shades of Grey” – or doesn’t want people to become fans of the racy movie series. The library in Berkley, Michigan says someone has been going around hiding DVD copies of the movie, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. Librarian Lauren Arnsman tells the Detroit Free Press the three movies in the […]

AM Prep-Segue   HARVEY WEINSTEIN – ARRAIGNMENT NEW YORK (AP) – New indictment, new arraignment for Harvey Weinstein. The disgraced movie mogul is due in court today in New York to answer for charges that he committed a sex crime against a third woman. An updated indictment in the case was filed last week – and it accuses Weinstein of a forcible sex act on a woman in 2006. The new charges also carry a pair of counts of predatory sexual assault – which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, if Weinstein is convicted. His attorney says he will plead not guilty.   WEINSTEIN CO. – BANKRUPTCY NEW YORK (AP) – A deal reached in the sale of Harvey Weinstein’s movie studio won’t leave Hollywood stars like Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep holding the bag. The company that is buying up the assets of the Weinstein Company says it has agreed to make payments to unsecured creditors in the case. That would include actors seeking residuals from projects released by The Weinstein Company. Lantern is seeking a $289 million deal to purchase what’s left of the production firm. A judge must approve the deal. A hearing is set for this week in Delaware – and Lantern hopes to close the deal by the weekend.   BOX OFFICE NEW YORK (AP) – Though it’s relatively small, the ant is considered one of the most powerful […]

PM Prep-Segue   HARVEY WEINSTEIN – COURT   NEW YORK (AP) – A judge has ordered that Harvey Weinstein (WYN’-steen) be released on continued bail while fighting sex charges. Weinstein pleaded not guilty at his arraignment today in Manhattan. He was brought into the Manhattan courtroom while handcuffed from behind, then uncuffed for the proceeding. Lawyer Ben Brafman argued there was no evidence the 66-year-old Weinstein would flee. An updated indictment alleges the movie mogul-turned-(hash)MeToo villain performed a forcible sex act on a woman in 2006. The new charges include two counts of predatory sexual assault, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison upon conviction. Lawyer Ben Brafman says Weinstein maintains all the allegations are false and he will be vindicated. A grand jury previously indicted Weinstein on charges involving two women.   HARVEY WEINSTEIN-GLORIA ALLRED NEW YORK (AP) – A lawyer for the third alleged sex crime victim in the prosecution against Harvey Weinstein says her client will testify if the case goes to trial. Gloria Allred said outside court Monday that she doubts Weinstein’s lawyer would allow him to do the same because it would subject him to cross-examination by prosecutors. Defense attorney Ben Brafman said during an arraignment that he expects more charges against the movie mogul. Weinstein maintains all the allegations are false and he will be vindicated.   WEINSTEIN CO. SALE – UNSECURED CREDITORS NEW YORK (AP) – Robert De […]

AM Prep-Segue   HARVEY WEINSTEIN – DEFENSE NEW YORK (AP) – Now that a New York City prosecutor has begun building a case against Harvey Weinstein, the lawyer for the disgraced movie mogul says he and his client are building a defense. Until now, all Weinstein has done was say – through a representative – that he denies any claims of forced sexual contact. Now, attorney Ben Brafman says Weinstein is helping to stack up what the lawyer calls “overwhelming evidence” to support his defense. Weinstein was in court yesterday, during which he pleaded not guilty to the latest indictment against him. He is now free on $1 million bail – and is due back in court on Sept. 20.     KEVIN SPACEY – SEXUAL MISCONDUCT NEW YORK (AP) – One of Kevin Spacey’s co-stars on “House of Cards” says she and the rest of the cast were surprised and saddened about the sexual misconduct allegations against the actor. In an interview on “Today,” Robin Wright says she “didn’t know the man” – in that she and Spacey only knew each other between “action and cut.” She says he was always professional – and that the two often shared giggles between scenes. Spacey was fired from the Netflix series after several employees accused him of inappropriate behavior. More than 15 men have since made allegations against Spacey.     GEOFFREY RUSH – DEFAMATION CANBERRA, Australia (AP) […]

AM Prep-Segue   GEORGE CLOONEY “FINE” AFTER MOTORBIKE CRASH OLBIA, Sardinia (AP) – From the looks of it, it could have turned out to be much worse. But reps for George Clooney say the actor “will be fine” after he slammed his motorbike into an oncoming car yesterday in Sardinia – an island off the coast of Italy. Surveillance footage of the wreck shows Clooney was thrown several yards in the air before landing on the pavement. He was treated at a hospital and released. Clooney is said to be in the area to shoot a TV series.   STORMY DANIELS AND DONALD TRUMP WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s about as big of a news meld as you can get: as President Trump unveiled his Supreme Court nominee Monday night, porn star Stormy Daniels was about a mile away, doing a strip show. The woman who says she had an affair with Trump danced at the Cloakroom, as dollar bills – some fake and some real – rained down upon her. The 15-minute show called “All Things Revealed” is part of Daniels’ effort to troll the Trump presidency. She is suing Trump and his former longtime personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen. And she is seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement she signed days before the 2016 presidential election.   HASAN MINHAJ HITTING THE ROAD NEW YORK (AP) – Hasan Minhaj has his act ready – and is […]

AM Prep-Segue   EMMY NOMINATIONS SET FOR TODAY LOS ANGELES (AP) – “Game of Thrones,” “This Is Us,” “Atlanta” and “Mom” are among the shows favored to make it on the list of Emmy-nominated TV programs when the list is read off later this morning (at 11:25 a.m. EDT). As is usually the case, a number of popular shows are expected to get nods – including, “Game of Thrones,” which already holds the series record for most awards in a year. It set the mark of 12 in 2015 – and matched that total the following year. The drama is expected to get competition from “Stranger Things.” On the comedy side of the ledger, “Veep’s” absence makes room for other funny shows to shine. Among those expected to do just that is “Atlanta,” which last year got directing and acting trophies for its creator and star, Donald Glover. STORMY DANIELS ARRESTED UNDATED (AP) – Stormy Daniels has been arrested. Her lawyer says the porn star has been arrested at an Ohio strip club – and is accused of letting patrons touch her. It’s a violation of state law in Ohio to do that, unless you’re family. Michael Avenatti tells The Associated Press Daniels was taken into custody during the show in Columbus. The attorney says during the show, some patrons touched Daniels in what he calls a “non-sexual way.” Avenatti calls the arrest a “complete set up.” […]

AM Prep-Segue   STORMY DANIELS RETURNS TO PERFORM AFTER CHARGES DROPPED COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The attorney for Stormy Daniels says his client was “set up” – and that her arrest was an “absurd use of law enforcement resources.” Prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio have dropped the charges they filed against the porn star who says she had an extramarital affair with Donald Trump before he became president. Daniels was charged with three misdemeanors after she was accused of illegal contact with undercover police officers attending her show. Prosecutors say she was improperly charged because the Ohio law against physical contact between strippers and customers applies only to regular performers at a club – and it was Daniels’ first appearance at the club in Columbus. She worked a different club last night.   EMMYS SURPRISES AND SNUBS NEW YORK (AP) – It seems TV fans and the people who decide what they see love rebooting old series and bringing them back. But that love doesn’t extend to Emmy voters. That was clear when it came to the nominations, announced yesterday. Take “Roseanne.” The reboot was a ratings hit when it returned. But it was virtually ignored in the nominations. The only one it got was for supporting actress Laurie Metcalf. And lest you think the Roseanne snub was due to star Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet storm that led to her being fired and her show canceled – it […]

AM Prep-Segue     BOX OFFICE   LOS ANGELES (AP) – There’s a new movie at the top of the box office chart. “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” is number one with $44.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. Even better are its international numbers. The movie has already earned more than $100 million worldwide. Number two is last week’s list-topper, “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” It took in $28.8 million in its second weekend. But it also posted one of the steeper second-week drops among Marvel-themed movies. Number three over the weekend is Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper,” which earned $25.5 million over the weekend. SCARLETT JOHANSSON PULLS OUT OF “RUB & TUG” NEW YORK (AP) – The backlash over Scarlett Johansson playing a transgender man in a movie has led to her decision to back out of the project. She is ditching plans for a key role in “Rub & Tug” – because of continued complaints about the casting decision. Johansson released a statement to Out.com saying she is quitting the role “in light of recent ethical questions” about casting herself as Dante “Tex” Gill, born a woman but who identified as a man. Johansson did herself no favors with her initial response to the criticism. In her original statement, she said the criticism aimed at her should rightfully to go other cisgender actors who have played trans characters.   DOWNTON ABBEY – MOVIE NEW YORK (AP) […]

AM Prep-Segue   TRUMP’S REMARKS SPARK CRITICISM BY CNN AND FOX NEW YORK (AP) – It may be no surprise that CNN anchors and commentators are on President Donald Trump’s case after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But when people on Fox call Trump out, it’s worth noting. Shepherd Smith told his audience: “Shameful, disgraceful, treasonous – those are some of the descriptions of what President Trump did.” On CNN, Anderson Cooper called Trump’s performance “disgraceful.” At a post-summit news conference, Trump said Putin was “extremely strong and powerful” in denying any election meddling. He also trashed the probe as “a disaster” for the U.S. For his part, Putin said the tampering claims are “nonsense” – while adding he favored Trump over Hillary Clinton as president. JOHNNY DEPP – LAWSUITS SETTLED LOS ANGELES (AP) – Johnny Depp has settled a pair of lawsuits that ended up shedding some light on his lifestyle. You may recall the actor sued his management firm for more than $25 million over alleged financial abuse and negligence. The company countersued, saying Depp was to blame for his own money woes because he spent more $2 million a month. The suit said Depp shelled out more than $75 million to buy and maintain 14 homes, including a French chateau, a chain of islands in the Bahamas and a yacht.   FARRAH ABRAHAM CHARGED IN HOTEL SECURITY BEEF LOS ANGELES (AP) – […]

AM Prep-Segue   ROBIN WILLIAMS DOCUMENTARY NEW YORK (AP) – Nearly four years after Robin Williams died, a documentary is being made about him. It’s “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind.” And filmmaker Marina Zenovich says she found early on in doing the project that she could tell the world about the popular comedian and actor by using footage of Williams talking about himself. Zenovich says one of the toughest things about the film was an interview with Williams’ friend and fellow comedian, Billy Crystal. She says when you hear Crystal, “you could really feel a sense of loss.” She says one line from the Crystal interview shows that. Zenovich says Crystal says of Williams: “Everyone wanted something from him. I had no agenda. I just liked him.” Williams killed himself in August 2014. He was 63.   MGM SUING VICTIMS OF LAS VEGAS MASSACRE LAS VEGAS (AP) – The mass shooting at the country music festival in Las Vegas last October shocked the nation. Now, a move being made by the corporate firm that owns the hotel from which the attack was launched is seen as shocking, too. MGM Resorts International has sued hundreds of victims of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The shooter who rained high-velocity bullets on people on the Harvest 91 music festival was holed up at the Mandalay Bay casino-resort as he killed 58 and injured hundreds more. The company […]

AM Prep-Segue   HARVEY WEINSTEIN – ASHLEY JUDD   LOS ANGELES (AP) – Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers are trying to get a lawsuit filed against the disgraced movie mogul kicked out of court. The suit is filed by actress Ashley Judd – and it says Weinstein tried to hurt her career after she rejected his sexual advances. In court documents filed in Los Angeles yesterday, Weinstein’s lawyers argued the suit is baseless – and want it dismissed. At issue in the request filed by Weinstein – is Judd’s claim that she told Weinstein she’d only let him touch her after she won an Oscar in one of his films. Judd says the comment, which she says Weinstein mentioned to her several times, was a joking way to get out of an awkward situation she found herself in. She says she made the comment after Weinstein asked in a Beverly Hills hotel room if he could give her a massage or she could watch him shower. STORMY DANIELS – OHIO LAW COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio city attorney is recommending that a state law used to arrest Stormy Daniels earlier this month should not be enforced. Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein makes the request in a memo to the city’s police chief. In the memo, Klein says future charges filed under that law will not be prosecuted. The law in question says dancers at “sexually oriented” businesses are […]

AM Prep-Segue   CHER – “MAMMA MIA – HERE WE GO AGAIN” LONDON (AP) – You know that feeling you get when you walk into a room where it seems everybody knows everybody – except you? That’s how Cher says she felt when she joined the cast of the sequel to “Mamma Mia.” She says as the newbie, she was a little apprehensive because “everyone knew each other” – and the actors and crew all seemed “like family.” But those concerns didn’t last long. Cher says everyone was “fabulous” to her – and she came to feel like family, too. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” opens in theaters today.   “BRADY BUNCH” HOME IS FOR SALE LOS ANGELES (AP) – The home featured in the opening and closing scenes of “The Brady Bunch” is for sale for $1.885 million. Real estate records list the buyers as George and Violet McCallister. The home contains some of the same rock-wall fireplace, wood paneling and floral-print wallpaper that made it look like many homes did back in the fashion-challenged 1970s. The split-level home has two bedrooms and three baths. And if you’re thinking two bedrooms weren’t quite enough to house the eight members of the Brady clan, you’re right. The house in question was used only for external shots. The inside scenes were shot in a studio. JEFF GOLDBLUM STATUE LONDON (AP) – It’s Jeff Goldblum as you’ve never […]

AM Prep-Segue     BOX OFFICE   UNDATED (AP) – One of the singing group ABBA’s biggest hits was “The Winner Takes It All.” And at the box office this past weekend, that principle applies – except it wasn’t the Swedish pop band that came out on top in the battle of two sequels. The nation’s top movie is Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2.” It edged out the ABBA reboot “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” by about one-and-a- half million dollars. Estimates say Washington’s movie took in $35.8 million from North American theaters over the weekend, while “Mamma Mia 2” captured $34.4 million. All told, it was a big weekend for sequels; all six of the top movies were reboots – and eight of the top 10 movies were sequels. SHONDA RHIMES – NETFLIX LOS ANGELES (AP) – We’re getting an idea of what Shonda Rhimes is planning to crank out under her production deal with Netflix. One of the first batches of shows will include a look at the migration of black families from the Jim Crow South. Other offerings will include a series about a romance among wealthy 19th century Londoners – and a documentary on Debbie Allen’s remix of “The Nutcracker.” Rhimes is the creator of hit shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal.” She signed a multiyear deal to produce Netflix shows last August. No word on when any of the new […]
