Stock market today: Wall Street inches higher with more corporate earnings on the way

Wall Street is pointing toward gains early to kick off a quiet week for economic data but another full slate of corporate earnings. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are both 0.4% higher before the bell Monday. Meat processor Tyson Foods rose 2.6% in premarket after it easily beat profit expectations, though it fell a hair short of sales forecasts. Shares in Spirit Airlines slid 3.5% before the bell after the budget airline came up short on Wall Street’s sales and profit targets for the quarter. Oil prices rose modestly.

Airbus has outpaced Boeing for five straight years in plane orders and deliveries. And now Boeing is facing a government-mandated production cap on its best-selling plane. Yet aviation analysts say the European company is unlikely to extend its advantage much further despite having customers clamoring for more commercial aircraft. That’s because Airbus already is making planes as fast as it can and is sold out for the rest of the decade. Manufacturing constraints at both companies are bad news for travelers as well as airlines.

NEW YORK (AP) — Text journalism’s biggest day of the year has arrrived with the annual announcement of the Pulitzer Prizes. The Columbia University-based Pulitzer Board on Monday will reveal winners and finalists in 15 journalism categories for work done in 2023. The awards normally highlight some of the previous year’s biggest stories. The ceremoney broadcast via livestream also will honor distinguished work in arts categories including books, music and theater. Columbia has been the site of student demonstrations over the war in Gaza in recent weeks, prompting the the Pulitzer Board to meet away from the New York City campus this past weekend to deliberate.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping will spend most of his five-day tour in Europe this week in two small countries at the continent’s eastern half. It’s a region Beijing has used as a foothold for its expanding economic ambitions in Europe. Xi first stops in Paris on Monday and then will travel to Hungary and Serbia. The two nations have autocratic leaders that are seen as China-friendly and close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mainstream European leaders have pursued more protectionist policies to limit Beijing and Moscow’s reach on the continent. Hungary and Serbia have courted economic ties with China. Electric vehicles are one example.

He says his suite of AI-powered tools can spin up customized emails, parse oceans of data to gauge voter sentiment and find persuadable voters and amplify the social media posts of “anti-woke” influencers to help conservative candidates, according to an Associated Press review.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kim Godwin is out as ABC News president after three years as the first Black woman to lead a television network news division. The move seemed inevitable after parent Walt Disney Co. earlier this year appointed another executive, Debra O’Connell, to oversee the division. Announcing the move on Sunday, O’Connell says she’ll be in charge at ABC News “for the time being.” Godwin was an outsider, appointed president of ABC News, after working most recently at CBS News. ABC’s flagship programs, “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America,” remain atop the network rankings, although the morning show has seen some slippage lately.
