DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College men’s basketball team trailed for over 33 minutes in its game Saturday at Erskine. Despite trailing for over half the contest, the Bobcats found a way to rally and defeat the Flying Fleet, 67-64. The win pushes LMC’s record to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in league play. The 16 victories ties the program’s single season win record that was set in 2015-16.
Considering that Lees-McRae was averaging nearly 90 points per game coming in Saturday’s contest, Erskine held the Bobcats in check in the opening 20 minutes of action. Six of LMC’s nine made field goals in the first half came via three-pointers. Additionally, the Bobcats only got to the line twice and went 1-for-2. With the Bobcat offense scuffling a bit, Erskine was able to control the pace of play for most of the first half as it held a six-point lead at the break, 31-25.
For about the first 10 minutes of the second half the Bobcats seemed like they were on the verge of taking the lead, but Erskine would answer to keep that from happening. It wasn’t until the clock read 2:58 to go that the Bobcats took the lead for good. Jordan Turner connected on one of his five three-pointers in the game to make it 61-58 Bobcats. After the three ball from Turner, the Bobcats got critical stops and points from their senior class. Josh Gaither made a layup for two and then Turner and Lepreece Lynch combined to go a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line to seal the victory.
Lynch and Turner both had stellar performances totaling 20 and 17 points, respectively. Lynch also totaled a season-high five steals in the win. Jason Saintizaire also had a solid outing off the bench scoring 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.
Riding a four-game winning streak, the Bobcats will look to make some program history when they travel to Southern Wesleyan Tuesday night. If the Bobcats can defeat the Warriors, which they did in Banner Elk earlier this season by a score of 93-80, it will set a new program record for wins in a season with four regular season tilts to go. Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
