BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State junior Randall Diabe, who wrestles in the 197-pound division, received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships on Tuesday afternoon.
Diabe will join App State automatic qualifiers Forrest Przybysz (174 pounds), Irvin Enriquez (141) and Alan Clothier (184) in Cleveland, where the championships will be held from March 15-17. Przybysz and Enriquez captured Southern Conference championships for the title-winning Mountaineers on Saturday, and Clothier earned the league’s second automatic berth from his weight class.
With 33 wrestlers filling every bracket at the NCAA Championships, there were five at-large spots available for the 197-pound wrestlers who didn’t qualify automatically. The at-large selections were based on head-to-head competition, quality wins, coaches’ ranking, results against common opponents, RPI, qualifying event placement and winning percentage.
In February, Diabe was ranked No. 27 in his weight class by the RPI and No. 32 by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Coaches’ Panel.
He is 19-7 this season after posting a SoCon dual record of 7-0 and going 3-1 during a third-place showing at the SoCon Championships. His perfect run through the league included a victory against highly ranked Chattanooga opponent Scottie Boykin, and Diabe also had nonconference wins of note against wrestlers from Oklahoma, Duke and Ohio.
