WXC/WTrack: Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Announces Addition of 16 Athletes


BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State women’s cross country and track & field program has announced the addition of 16 athletes to the program for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

The Black and Gold welcome Daryn Armstrong, Baylee Bilyeu, Hassani Burris, Kathleen Burroughs, Kayla Carson, Izzy Evely, Katherine Fearn, Kylee Frady, Lia Greengrass, Caroline Grier, Bridget Kunkel, Araybian Lilly, Jenna Lineberry, Madison McCoy, Jorja Medders and Jelonnie Smith.

Daryn Armstrong | Cary, N.C. | Panther Creek High School
Armstrong will compete for the Mountaineers primarily in the triple jump. She qualified for the NCHSAA 4A State Championship in 2017 and 2018, finishing ninth and fourth, respectively. This season, Armstrong posted a PR mark of 39-4.00 at the NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional, which was second and qualified her for the state meet. She will also play volleyball at Appalachian State.

Baylee Bilyeu | Salem, Mo. | Salem High School
Bilyeau will compete in field events for the Black and Gold, focusing on discus and shot put. She won her first five meets of the 2018 season in the discus and finished third at the MSHSAA State Track & Field Championships in Class 3, 4 and 5 with a PR toss of 129-3.00. She also finished second at the state meet in the discus last season with a mark of 128-2. In the shot put, Bilyeu posted back-to-back fourth place finishes at the state championship meet, with tosses of 40-6.25 in 2017 and 40-6.00 in 2018.

Hassani Burris | Gastonia, N.C. | Ashbrook High School
Burris will look to make an impact for the Mountaineers in the jumps department. She was a three-time qualifier for the NCHSSA 3A Indoor State Championships, capturing the triple jump title in 2018 with a PR leap of 38-2.75. Burris also qualified for the NCHSAA 3A State Indoor Championships three times in the long jump, finishing second in 2017 with a mark of 17-5.50. In outdoor jumping events, Burris participated in the NCHSAA 3A State Championship in the long jump in 2017, finishing seventh with a mark of 16-4.75, and in the triple jump in 2017, finishing 13th.

Kathleen Burroughs | Oxford, N.C. | Granville Central High School
Burroughs enjoyed a standout cross country career at Granville Central High School, qualifying for the NCHSAA State Championship meet in all four years. She posted a sixth-place finish at the 2017 state championship meet, crossing in 20:24.27. Burroughs also placed 11th at the meet in 2017 and 10th in 2016. Burroughs won the Northern Carolina Conference Meet in 2017 in a PR time of 19:10.00 and won the Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference individual title in 2016 in 19:41.00.

Kayla Carson | Chapel Hill, N.C. | East Chapel Hill
Carson will compete in the high jump for App State. The Chapel Hill, N.C. native qualified for the NCHSAA 3A Indoor State Championship Meet for three straight seasons, capturing the title in 2018 with a mark of 5-4.00. She placed second in the high jump in 2016 with a mark of 5-4.00 and was third in 2017 with a mark of 5-4.00. Carson was also a two-time outdoor state qualifier in the high jump, finishing third in 2018, clearing 5-2.00, and finishing eighth in 2017, also clearing 5-2.00.

Izzy Evely | Cornelius, N.C. | Lake Norman Charter School
Evely will compete in both cross country and distance events for the Black and Gold. In the 2017 cross country season, she captured the South Fork Conference title in 18:18.18 and led her Lake Norman Charter School to the team state title with a second-place finish in the 5k race in a PR time of 18:07.57. Evely also had had success in the outdoor track season. She is a two-time outdoor state qualifier in the 800-meter run in 2016 and 2017, registering a third-place finish in 2016 in 2:17.98. She participated in the NCHSAA 2A Outdoor State Championship in 2018, placing second in both the 1,600-meter run (5:12.04) and 3,200-meter run (11:14.78).

Katherine Fearn | Raleigh, N.C. | Leesville Road High School
Fearn will run in cross country for the Mountaineers. In 2017, she placed 90th at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional Race, crossing in a new PR time of 21:31.90. She recorded two top-20 finishes at the CAP 7 Conference Championship, finishing 18th in 22:52.75 in 2015 and sixth in 23:08.00 in 2016.

Kylee Frady | Mooresville, N.C. | Lake Norman High School
Frady placed in the top-10 in three 5k cross country races in 2016, including a ninth-place finish at the Wendy’s Invitational in a PR time of 19:45.51. In the 2016 outdoor track season, she captured the North Piedmont Conference title in the 800-meter run in 2:22.25 and went on to finish 11th at the NCHSAA 4A State Championship in the event with a time of 2:20.48. She will join the program as a transfer from East Carolina.

Lia Greengrass | Cary, N.C. | Panther Creek High School
The Cary, N.C. native will run in cross country events for the Mountaineers. She is a two-time NCHSAA state qualifier in cross country, posting her best finish of 59th in 2016. Greengrass ran her 5k PR time at the NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional in 2016, crossing 17th overall with a time of 19:53.23.

Caroline Grier | Charlotte, N.C. | Myers Park High School
Grier recorded a solid senior cross country season at Myers Park High School. She competed at the NCHSAA State Championship Meet, finishing 104th in a 5k PR time of 21:00.10. She also finished 10th at the Southwestern Conference Championship this past season in 21:41.30 and in 2015 in 24:24.93.

Bridget Kunkel | Lemont, Ill. | Lemont High School
Kunkel will join the Mountaineers as a transfer from Indiana. In high school, she participated in the IHSA Cross Country State Championship for three straight seasons from 2014-16. At the 2014 state meet, Kunkel was 56th with a time of 18:34.00, while she notched an 83rd place finish in 2016 in 18:57.00. Her top performance came at the 2015 IHSA Cross Country State Championship, where she posted a 28th place finish in a 3-mile PR time of 18:06.20.

Araybian Lilly | Mt. Gilead, N.C. | West Montgomery High School
Lilly, a native of Mt. Gilead, N.C., will compete in sprints for App State. In outdoor competition, Lilly qualified for the NCHSAA 1A State Indoor Championship three straight seasons in the 200-meter dash, capturing the state title in 2017 in 25.36 seconds and in 2018 in 25.73 seconds. She also captured the outdoor state title in back-to-back seasons in the 400-meter dash, crossing first in 58.33 seconds in 2017 and in a PR time of 57.06 seconds in 2018.

Jenna Lineberry | Winston-Salem, N.C. | Mt. Tabor High School
Lineberry is a three-time qualifier for the NCHSAA Cross Country State Championships, finishing 26th in 2016 (19:29.89) and 2017 (19:36.14). She clocked a PR in the 5K at the NCHSAA 3A Midwest Regional, crossing eighth overall in 19:25.05. In track events, she finished second at the Piedmont Triad 3A Conference Championship in the 1,600-meter run this season in 5:34.26, while also qualifying for the NCHSAA 3A State Outdoor Championship in the 800-meter run, where she placed fifth in 2:21.54.

Madison McCoy | Andersonville, Tenn. | Andersonville
McCoy will join the Mountaineers as a transfer from Charleston Southern. This past season, she placed fifth at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the discus, with a toss of 137-11. She also was 10th overall in the hammer, covering 152-1 with her toss. At the Big South Track & Field Indoor Championships, she placed 14th in the shot put with a mark of 34-9.00 and 17th In the weight throw with a mark of 37-7.25.

Jorja Medders | Waxhaw, N.C. | Marvin Ridge High School
Medders will compete in hurdles and long sprints for the Apps. She qualified for the NCHSAA 3A Outdoor State Championship three times in the 300-meter hurdles, winning the title in 2017 with a PR time of 44.36 seconds and finishing second in 2016 in 44.95 seconds. Medders captured the outdoor 400-meter run at the Marvin Ridge Home Meet this past season in 1:00.91 and recorded a PR time of 58.69 seconds in 2016.

Jelonnie Smith | Southport, N.C. | South Brunswick
Smith comes to the High Country from Southport, N.C. and will run sprints for the Black and Gold. In outdoor competition this season, she finished fifth at the NCHSAA 3A State Championships in the 200-meter dash in 25.17 seconds, while finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash in a PR time of 57.56 seconds. Smith also qualified for the outdoor state meet in the 400-meter dash in 2017, finishing eighth in 59.64 seconds, and in 2016, finishing ninth with a time of 1:00.54.
