SB: App State Begins Sun Belt Play at Home against UL Monroe


BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State softball opens Sun Belt Conference play at home this season with a series against the UL Monroe Warhawks on Saturday, March 10 at 1 & 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers are 10-10 overall. This is the second season in a row that the Apps head into conference play with a .500 record or above. Last year, App State was 10-8 before the first Sun Belt Conference series against Louisiana was cancelled due to weather.
The Apps look to continue their winning streak through the weekend. The last six games resulted in wins for the Mountaineers against Tennessee Tech and Norfolk State.
Jenny Dodd is a force to be reckoned with in the batter’s box. In the past six games, she has gone 11-17 to bring her season batting average to .409. All four of her home runs this season were in the Apps’ last six wins. Keri White follows with a .355 batting average. White is responsible for 12 of the Mountaineers’ 91 runs so far this season with 11 RBIs.
Haley StewartBaylee Morton and Dodd each hit at least one homer earlier in the week against Norfolk State. Stewart sent her first grand slam over the wall in the Apps’ 9-0 shutout of the Spartans. She contributes a team-high 13 RBIs.
Four of five Mountaineer pitches earned wins early in the week – Katie WillifordKenzie LonganeckerCallie Kuykendall and Annaleise Kennedy. Longanecker, Kuykendall and Kennedy all threw complete games.
Scouting the Warhawks
 ULM is 10-7 this season. Last weekend in the Blues City Classic at Memphis, the Warhawks were 2-2 with their last two games resulting in losses against Memphis and Missouri – Kansas City.
Paige Murray has pitched 40-1/3 innings, the most for the Warhawks. She is 4-2 this season with a 4.69 ERA. Sydney Wader and Racheal Murphy follow with 24.2 and 27.1 innings pitched respectively. All four pitchers for ULM hold an ERA above 4.0.
Sydney McKay, a junior outfielder, leads the Warhawks at the plate with a .438 batting average. In 64 at bats, she has 28 hits and 13 RBIs.
App State is 1-9 overall against the SBC opponent ULM. The Apps took a win from the Warhawks in 2016.
