MBB: Men’s Basketball Announces Signing of Breki Gylfason and James Lewis

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State head men’s basketball coach Jim Fox has announced the additions of Breki Gylfason (Reykjavik, Iceland) and James Lewis (Mt. Holly, N.C./Northside Christian Academy) to the program.

Gylfason most recently played for Haukar Hafnarfjordur in the Dominos League in Iceland.

In the 2017-18 season for Haukar Hafnarfjordur, Gylfason appeared in 31 contests, making 10 starts and averaging 7.3 points on 43.5 percent shooting, to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 18 blocks in 18.1 minutes. In 2016-17, he averaged 4.7 points and 3.1 rebounds in 22 games, with six coming as starts.

At the FIBA U20 Euro Championship in 2017, he helped Iceland advance to the final eight with averages of 5.0 points and 4.1 rebounds in 17.4 minutes of action.

“We are pleased to welcome Breki to our Appalachian family,” said Fox. “He has traveled all over the world with his experience playing in Iceland and his basketball background. He will give us versatility and the toughness that we need. Breki is an extremely hard worker and we are looking forward to having him in the lineup.”

Lewis appeared in 27 games at UT Chattanooga in 2017-18, making 21 starts. He reached double figures in seven contests and averaged 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds on 50.8 percent shooting.

Lewis, who missed six contests during the season due to an injury, lead the Mocs in offensive rebounds with 60. The Mount Holly, N.C. native had a strong outing against Tennessee Tech, tallying a double-double with a career-high tying 15 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

He also excelled in the classroom at UT Chattanooga, appearing on the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in both semesters.

“We are really excited to add James to our program,” added Fox. “He will take his developmental year to improve all aspects of his game, after having a very good freshman season at UT Chattanooga. He is someone that will continue to get better and build off of that success. We are looking forward to having James as part of our family.”

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Lewis will sit out the 2018-19 season for the Mountaineers.

Glyfason and Lewis join Adrian Delph as the newest roster additions for the Black and Gold.
