Ashe County Announces Final Day for Placing Hurricane Helene Storm Debris on Public Right-of-Way

Ashe County, NC – As part of the ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, Ashe County residents are reminded that March 5 is the final day to place storm debris along the public right-of-way for collection by the county’s debris removal contractors. After this date, the debris removal contractors will make their last pass down roads maintained by the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

Effective March 5, community members will no longer be permitted to dump any storm debris—whether vegetative or construction/demolition—into the NCDOT right-of-way. This deadline marks the end of a special waiver of local and state ordinances that allowed for storm-related debris disposal. Individuals who place debris into the NCDOT right-of-way after March 5 may be subject to enforcement of applicable state and local ordinances.

“We realize there may be some scattered vegetation and construction/demolition debris remaining after March 5, and the County is committed to working with debris removal vendors to address these issues,” said a county representative. “We encourage all residents to make arrangements for debris removal by the final deadline to ensure their debris is picked up.”

After March 10th, residents that believe their debris has been missed may contact the county at de****@as***********.com. The county will forward these issues to the debris removal contractor for resolution.
