Free annual day camp is for children, youth on the autism spectrum
BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University’s annual Camp Crinkleroot, a free day camp for children and youth on the autism spectrum or with a similar disorder, is now accepting applications for spring 2025. The camp will take place April 4 and 5 at App State’s Levine Hall of Health Sciences, located at 1179 State Farm Road in Boone.
Now in its 14th year, Camp Crinkleroot is designed for children ages 8 to 14 with a primary or secondary autism diagnosis. The camp will host a maximum of 12 campers to ensure a supportive and engaging experience.
Camp Crinkleroot provides a welcoming environment where children on the autism spectrum can participate in fun, structured activities designed to promote social inclusion and developmental growth. This spring’s camp will feature a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) focus.
Activities will begin on Friday night, with the annual potluck dinner at Levine Hall, during which campers will meet their counselors and connect with peers.
On Saturday morning, campers will kick off the day at BuildFest at Watauga High School, where hands-on STEAM activities will encourage creativity and exploration. Each camper will be paired one-on-one with an App State student, allowing campers to foster meaningful connections and social development through small-group activities.
The deadline to apply for Camp Crinkleroot is March 24. To apply and for more information, visit ihhs.appstate.edu/crinkleroot.
