BOONE, N.C. – The continued classroom success of App State student-athletes has enabled the Mountaineers to again post strong numbers as the NCAA released its latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data this week.
APR data measures eligibility and retention each academic term and outlines ongoing academic performance for each program.
With a release of information through the 2022-23 cycle, App State ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference by having three teams record a perfect multiyear (four-year) average APR score of 1,000: men’s golf, women’s cross country and tennis.
App State had seven of its teams record a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000 in 2022-23: men’s golf, softball, tennis, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country and women’s golf.
A portion of Division I revenue is distributed to member schools based on the academic achievement of student-athletes, and one benchmark for schools to qualify for more funding is having a department-wide APR of 985 or greater. When taking all sports within an athletics department into account, App State posted a multiyear average of 986 — higher than the national Division I average of 984.
Twelve App State sports — or 75 percent of its entries based on APR classification — had multi-year APR averages surpassing or essentially matching the national average at the Division I level.
All of App State’s varsity teams possessed multiyear APR scores higher than 965 — the minimum APR multiyear standard for an NCAA team with no potential penalties is 930, with the latest four-year period including the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
The APR data released Tuesday doesn’t account for a strong 2023-24 calendar, as App State student-athletes extended their streak to 12 consecutive years with a cumulative GPA above 3.0 by performing well in the 2024 spring semester. Sixteen teams boasted a spring semester GPA above 3.0.
During the 2024 spring, 60 student-athletes made the Chancellor’s List (GPA of 3.85 or higher in courses that earn credits toward graduation) and 142 more were honored as members of the Dean’s List (GPA of 3.45 or higher while carrying 12-14 academic hours or a GPA of 3.25 or higher while carrying at least 15 academic hours).
In September, when the Sun Belt Conference last announced academic honors for its member institutions, App State ranked in the top four among the 14 football-playing members with a combined 223 honorees among the lists for the Academic Honor Roll (league-high 102 members), Commissioner’s List (109 members) and 1A Far Academic Excellence Award (12 members).
