TENNIS-US OPEN

Into US Open SF, Nadal tries to close gap with Federer

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal has been gaining on Roger Federer in the Grand Slam title standings and has a chance to add to his total at the U.S. Open.

Nadal will try to move closer to a fourth championship at Flushing Meadows and 19th major overall when he meets No. 24 seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the semifinals Friday.

Federer holds the men’s record of 20 majors.

The other semifinal will be No. 5 Daniil Medvedev against 78th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov (GREE’-gohr DIH’-mih-trahv), who eliminated Federer in the quarterfinals.

Berrettini and Medvedev are both making their semifinal debut, while Dimitrov is 0-2 in major semis so far. Dimitrov is also the lowest-ranked semifinalist at Flushing Meadows since 1991.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Dodgers closing in on NL West title

UNDATED (AP) _ Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers have a magic number of four to clinch their seventh consecutive NL West title. They could do it at home this weekend against rival San Francisco _ depending on how Arizona fares in Cincinnati.

Kershaw (13-4, 2.96 ERA) starts the first game opposite Jeff Samardzija (suh-MAHR’-juh) (9-11, 3.61), who is 0-3 with a 4.21 ERA in five appearances at Dodger Stadium.

Los Angeles lefty Rich Hill will face hitters as he works his way back from a forearm strain.

Elsewhere in the majors:

_ Minnesota has a chance to widen its 6 1/2-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland and perhaps all but salt away the division title when the Twins host the Indians for a three-game series. Michael Pineda Pineda (pih-NAY’-dah) pitches the opener for the Twins, back home from an 8-2 road trip. Adam Plutko goes for Cleveland.

_ The Tigers and A’s have to finish a game that was suspended in May before they begin a regularly scheduled game in Oakland. The May 19 game in Detroit was halted with the A’s leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Back then, the A’s were in the middle of putting together their first 10-game winning streak since 2006. But that could get wiped away if Oakland can’t win the suspended game. If the A’s hang on, the winning streak will go to 11 games. If the Tigers rally to win, Oakland’s streak from that stretch will only be considered a seven-gamer.

CHURCHILL DOWNS-WINTER RACING

Churchill Downs presents plan to offer winter racing

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The home of the Kentucky Derby wants to start offering live racing in the winter.

Churchill Downs says it will seek approval from Kentucky horse racing regulators to allow the Louisville track to host live racing in the winter of 2020. It’s part of a strategy by its parent company to expand its footprint into northern Kentucky.

If Churchill’s application is approved, live racing would occur at the Louisville track in January through March and in December of 2020. After that, Churchill hopes those racing dates are given to a facility Churchill plans to build in northern Kentucky.

Churchill is seeking racing dates that historically have been given to Turfway Park in northern Kentucky. Calls to Turfway’s racing office went unanswered.

Churchill already offers live racing in the spring and fall.
