NL East battle
UNDATED (AP) – Second-place Washington gets a chance to cut into Atlanta’s 5 1/2-game lead in the NL East when the Braves visit for the opener of a three-game series. Patrick Corbin, ranked second in the majors with a 1.68 ERA at home, starts for the Nationals against Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) in a matchup of veteran left-handers.
Also on the big league schedule:
– Righthander Kenta Maeda is looking for his first win since May 31st as the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Colorado Rockies for the first of three. The Dodgers have baseball’s best record after taking two of three from the Nationals in Washington over the weekend.
– The Pittsburgh Pirates are hoping to snap an eight-game losing streak as they open a series in Cincinnati against the Reds. Righthander Jordan Lyles is on the mound for Pittsburgh. He’s allowed 16 runs over eight innings in his last three starts.
– Detroit Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is still looking for his first win of the season as the Tigers open a three-game series in Anaheim. Zimmermann is 0-and-8 so far this season. He’s facing the Angels’ Jaime Barria. The Tigers have lost six in a row.
– There are three other games on the major league schedule as Wednesday’s trade deadline approaches. The Arizona Diamondbacks will be hoping to move closer to a National League wild card spot as they open a series in Miami against the Marlins. The Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals take identical 40-and-67 records into their game in K.C. And the San Diego Padres host the Baltimore Orioles in an interleague matchup.
