Rockies, Cubs try to improve playoff position

UNDATED (AP) – The Colorado Rockies have won six in row, boosting their playoff position. The NL West leaders aim for a four-game sweep when they take on the Phillies at Coors Field, having outscored them 34-4 so far in the series. Antonio Senzatela starts for the Rockies against Jake Arrieta.

The Rockies’ 14-0 win Wednesday night moved them a half-game past the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division lead. They’re also 1 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot.

Elsewhere in the majors:

– Lefty Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs try to maintain their lead in the NL Central when they host Pittsburgh. Lester is 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his last seven starts. The Cubs have a half-game edge over Milwaukee, which is idle. Chicago and the Brewers both have clinched playoff spots, so one will win the division and the other will be in the all-or-nothing wild-card game.

– Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole gets loose when he pitches at Baltimore tonight. His following start will come in the Division Series when AL West champion Houston takes on Cleveland. Cole has 272 strikeouts. Teammate Justin Verlander leads the league with 280.

Cousins, McVay back together when Vikings visit LA Rams

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings visit the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s Thursday night game. The NFC showdown reunites Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins with his mentor, Rams coach Sean McVay.

Cousins was an eager young quarterback and Sean McVay was a precocious offensive coordinator when they got together in Washington. After they collaborated on two productive seasons with the Redskins, the partnership led to big things for both men. McVay became the NFL’s youngest head coach in Los Angeles, and Cousins got an $84 million contract in Minnesota.

Both say they wouldn’t be where they are without the other.

The Rams enter the game 3-0 while the Vikings are 1-1-1.

No. 16 Miami hosts North Carolina

MIAMI (AP) – The No. 16 Miami Hurricanes begin defense of their ACC Coastal Division title when they host North Carolina Thursday night. The Hurricanes are seeking a 12th straight regular-season home victory, and the Tar Heels are looking to reach .500 or better for the first time since being 8-5 at the end of 2016.

North Carolina leads their series record 11-10.

Ex-Gator Adarius Lemons charged with strangling girlfriend

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Former Florida running back Adarius Lemons has been charged with slamming his girlfriend into walls and choking her.

Leomons left the team after a loss to Kentucky this month. He is charged with battery by strangulation, battery and criminal mischief. He was arrested Wednesday and remains in the Alachua County Jail on a $65,000 bond.

According to an affidavit, Lemons rammed his longtime girlfriend into three walls Sept. 21 and grabbed her neck, restricting her breathing. The victim sustained several injuries.
