Update on the latest in sports:

SEATTLE (AP) – Two teams with Super Bowl pedigrees but scratching to remain in the playoff hunt meet in Seattle tonight, as the Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers.

Seven NFC teams – including Seattle and Green Bay – are within a couple of games of each other competing for the two wild-card spots. And every advantage or tiebreaker in that race – such as a head-to-head victory – could end up being crucial.

Seattle has lost two straight to drop to 4-5 on the season. The Seahawks haven’t lost three straight since 2011.

Green Bay snapped a two-game losing streak with a 31-12 thumping of Miami last week. The Packers now stand at 4-4 with one tie, putting them just ahead of Seattle in the playoff picture.

Pens-Lightning, Sharks-Leafs highlight an intriguing 9-game NHL slate

UNDATED (AP) – Coming into the season, the Lightning and Penguins appeared to be two of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference. As the season approaches the quarter mark, Tampa Bay leads the conference, while Pittsburgh is mired close to the bottom.

The Pens will be looking to address that when they play the Lighting tonight in Pittsburgh. And they’ll have a bit of a new look, with injuries, inconsistency and a trade, which brought in forward Tanner Pearson from the Kings yesterday, shuffling the lines. The Lightning meanwhile are coming off a 2-1 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday night, but sit atop the Atlantic Division having scored more goals so far this season, 64, than any team but the Colorado Avalanche.

Toronto trails the Lightning by only one point in the standings. They are in San Jose to face the Pacific Division-leading Sharks in a matchup of two of the leagues’ top scoring teams.

The rest of the NHL schedule features a pair of regional rivalries, as New York’s Rangers pay a visit to the Islanders and the New Jersey Devils travel down I-95 to play the Flyers in Philadelphia.

The Florida Panthers are in Columbus to play the Blue Jackets, while the Red Wings visit Ottawa and the Minnesota Wild hosts Vancouver.

The Western Conference-leading Nashville Predators take on the Coyotes in Arizona, while two Canadian teams meet in Calgary where the Flames host Montreal.

Warriors missing Curry as they face Rockets

UNDATED (AP) – The Warriors will be without Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry when they take on the Rockets tonight in Houston.

The two-time MVP strained his left groin during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks a week ago and has been sidelined the past three games. He’s not expect to play at all during Golden State’s three-game Texas road trip, though he is traveling with the Warriors.

There are two other games in the NBA tonight. The Atlanta Hawks are in Denver to play the Nuggets, while the L.A. Clippers host the San Antonio Spurs.

No. 3 Gonzaga one of six top 25 teams in action

UNDATED (AP) – Gonzaga faces its first test of the young season when they host Texas A&M tonight. It will be A&M’s first road game of the season.

While not being ranked, the Aggies have made noise in the NCAA tournament two out of the last three seasons under coach Billy Kennedy. Gonzaga continues to play without star forward Killian Tillie, who is out for eight weeks with an ankle injury.

Elsewhere, No. 13 Oregon is at Iowa , while No. 15 Syracuse visits UConn and No. 21 TCU hosts Fresno State.

No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 23 Purdue are playing in the Charleston Classic in South Carolina. The Hokies of the Atlantic Coast Conference open play this morning against Ball State. The Boilermakers of the Big Ten Conference begin action later in the day against Appalachian State.
