Israel says its forces likely unintentionally shot and killed an American activist in the West Bank
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — The Israeli military says an American activist who was shot and killed in the West Bank last week was likely shot “indirectly and unintentionally” by Israeli forces aiming at someone else. Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old activist from Seattle, was killed on Friday following a demonstration against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The military said Tuesday its inquiry “found that it is highly likely that she was hit indirectly and unintentionally” and that the fire “was not aimed at her,” but at the “key instigator of the riot.” Other protesters said there had been clashes between Israeli forces firing tear gas and live rounds and Palestinians throwing rocks but it had subsided before Eygi was shot.
A woman is killed near Moscow after more than 140 Ukrainian drones target Russia, officials say
Officials say over 140 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple Russian regions overnight, including Moscow and surrounding areas, in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian soil in the 2 1/2-year war. A Russian regional governor says drones hit two multistory residential buildings and started fires in the town of Ramenskoye just outside Moscow. A woman was killed and eight people were injured. He says five residential buildings were evacuated due to falling drone debris. The attack also prompted the authorities to temporarily shut down three airports just outside Moscow. A total of 48 flights were diverted.
Nearly half East Timor’s population saw Pope Francis. How does that compare with other papal Masses?
TASITOLU, East Timor (AP) — An estimated 600,000 people packed a seaside park in East Timor for Pope Francis’ Mass — a figure nearing half of the small Southeast Asian country’s population. It took place on the same field where St. John Paul II prayed during the nation’s fight for independence from Indonesia. While other papal Masses have drawn millions of people in more populous countries, the crowd in small East Timor is believed to represent the biggest turnout for a papal event ever in terms of the proportion of the population. Other massive crowds to see popes have occurred in the Philippines, Brazil, Congo and Poland.
AP-NORC/USAFacts poll: Republicans are more likely to trust Trump than official election results
CHICAGO (AP) — Republicans are more likely to trust Donald Trump and his campaign over government certified election results, according to a new survey from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts. And while most Americans trust government-certified election results, they are also heading into the November election with concerns about misinformation and a low trust in the information they receive from presidential candidates and the federal government. Many find it difficult to access information about presidential candidates but easier to find information about how and where to vote.
Declassified memo from US codebreaker sheds light on Ethel Rosenberg’s Cold War spy case
WASHINGTON (AP) — A top U.S. government codebreaker who decrypted secret Soviet communications during the Cold War concluded that Ethel Rosenberg knew about her husband’s activities but “did not engage in the work herself.” That’s according to a memo written days after she was arrested in the sensational atomic espionage case and shown to the AP by the couple’s sons. The previously unreported assessment adds to questions about the criminal case against Ethel Rosenberg, who along with her husband, Julius, was put to death in 1953 after being convicted of conspiring to steal secrets about the atomic bomb for the Soviet Union. Her sons have worked for decades to establish that their mother was falsely implicated and say she should be exonerated.
Francine gains strength and is expected to be a hurricane when it reaches US Gulf Coast
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Tropical Storm Francine is churning in extremely warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico with increasing strength. It is expected to reach hurricane status Tuesday before making landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 96 to 110 mph. A hurricane warning was in effect along the Louisiana coast from the border with Texas eastward to Grand Isle, about 50 miles south of New Orleans. Francine is the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry urged residents to prepare, follow evacuation warnings and not wait until the last minute to act.
Limits to anti-nausea pill coverage wear on cancer patients and doctors
Some cancer patients are hitting coverage limits on a cheap anti-nausea pill that can ward off waves of vomiting after treatment. Doctors say restrictions on the number of tablets can hurt care. Pharmacy benefit managers say their restrictions guard against overuse. In between sits patients. They may have to ration pills or opt for less-effective help. The conflict offers a glimpse at how relatively simple acts of care can grow complex in the fragmented U.S. health care system.
Americans’ inflation-adjusted incomes rebounded to pre-pandemic levels last year
WASHINGTON (AP) — The inflation-adjusted median income of U.S. households rebounded last year to roughly its 2019 level, overcoming the biggest price spike in four decades to restore most Americans’ purchasing power. The proportion of Americans living in poverty also fell slightly last year, to 11.1%, from 11.5% in 2022. And the ratio of women’s median earnings to men’s widened for the first time in more than two decades as men’s income rose more than women’s in 2023. The latest data came Tuesday in an annual report from the Census Bureau, which said the median household income, adjusted for inflation, rose 4% to $80,610 in 2023, up from $77,450 in 2022.
