RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A local North Carolina grand jury has advanced its consideration of possible criminal charges against state Attorney General Josh Stein and two aides over an investigation into a political ad targeting Stein’s 2020 opponent. The Wake County grand jury asked the Wake district attorney on Monday to submit an indictment for consideration “against any and each” of the named members on the “presentment” document. No charges have been filed in the case. Stein is a possible 2024 candidate for governor. His campaign has tried to block enforcement of a state law that has served as the basis for the investigation, calling it unconstitutional.

ERWIN, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a couple has been charged with murder after the body of their baby was found buried in their backyard. News outlets report that Erwin police said they’ve charged 28-year-old Dustin VanDyke and 18-year-old Gracie Riddle with first-degree murder. VanDyke and Riddle appeared in court Monday, were ordered held without bond and will be appointed public defenders. Erwin Police Chief Jonathan Johnson says police received a report Friday that a baby had died and the death wasn’t reported. With the help of a cadaver dog, police say they found the infant in the backyard. Police say the death doesn’t appear to be accidental, but investigators are awaiting an autopsy for the cause of death.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Police say a gun buyback event in Raleigh, North Carolina, has resulted in the surrender of 267 functional firearms and an additional 11 inoperable weapons. The Raleigh Police Department says nearly 150 people voluntarily surrendered their firearms at Saturday’s event. The guns will have to be stored or sold on the open market, under a 2015 state law, and the proceeds given to local schools. Gun violence is a priority for the city this year, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin told The News & Observer in a recent interview.
