Helicopter pilot killed in North Carolina crash
WINGATE, N.C. (AP) – A helicopter pilot has died after a crash in North Carolina. The Union County Sheriff’s Office said the helicopter was reportedly cropdusting fields when it became tangled in power lines. The crash occurred Sunday near Bell Mill Road near Wingate, a few miles southeast of Charlotte. The sheriff’s office said the pilot was the only person aboard the helicopter when it crashed. No further information was immediately available Sunday afternoon.
Police charge 2 with shooting each other at N. Carolina mall
PINEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Police say two men who shot each other in a confrontation at a North Carolina shopping mall are facing criminal charges. Pineville Police said Sunday they have charged both 32-year-old Kevion Harris and 24-year-old Jamie G’Vantay Williams with assault with a deadly weapon and firearms possession by a convicted felon. Police evacuated the Carolina Place Mall Saturday afternoon when the shooting broke out. Both men were injured, and police said Sunday they are recovering from their injuries at hospitals. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.
Use-of-force cases prompt state debates over officer records
DENVER (AP) – Lawmakers in more than 20 states have considered bills this year to make the disciplinary records of police officers public. The push comes amid high-profile deaths at the hands of law enforcement. Such records are shielded from the news media and the public in about 20 states. At least 16 states have contemplated making the records public. Eight have looked into making them accessible to other law enforcement agencies as a way to prevent officers with a history of misconduct in one city from being hired in another.
MALL SHOOTING-NORTH CAROLINA
1 shot at Charlotte-area mall; no arrests reported
PINEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say one person has been shot inside a Charlotte-area mall. The Carolina Place Mall was evacuated, and Pineville police tweeted Saturday evening that officers had finished clearing the mall. No arrests were immediately reported. Mecklenburg County EMS said the shooting victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. A second person was also taken to a hospital for a non-life-threatening medical complaint. Authorities did not say what prompted the shooting. Police Chief Michael Hudgins told WCNC-TV they do not currently believe the shooting was random. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it is helping local authorities with the investigation.
Sheriff: Boone shooter attacked father days earlier
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman says the shooter who killed two deputies and two civilians in Boone this week also threatened his father with a knife recently. The alleged assault prompted Isaac Alton Barnes’ family to go to a magistrate for assistance. The father also called the county sheriff’s office for help. Barnes, his mother and stepfather were found dead after a 13-hour standoff with police. Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox were killed in the line of duty. A service for the fallen officers will be held in Boone on Thursday. Hagaman says Barnes had a “large cache” of weapons and could have killed more people through a mass shooting targeting the general public.
Man dies after accident at North Carolina ATV park
GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) – A 21-year-old man has died after an accident at a North Carolina ATV park. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred Friday night at the Busco Beach and ATV Park in Goldsboro. The man was riding an ATV on an uneven trail which pitched the vehicle up onto its rear wheels. The sheriff’s office said the man was thrown back and struck his head on the ATV. He was wearing head protection but nevertheless died at the scene. Authorities withheld identification of the victim pending notification of family.
