VIRUS OUTBREAK-NORTH CAROLINA-COLLEGE TESTING
N. C. State requiring COVID-19 test before return to campus
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Students, faculty and staff at North Carolina State University will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to campus in the spring. WNCN-TV reports the school announced the new policy Friday. The decision comes after more than 1,000 cases forced the school to move mostly to remote classes during the fall semester. Those returning to campus will be required to get tested three to five days before the semester starts. Anyone who refuses to comply can face disciplinary action. The school also plans to expand its testing capabilities as it expects several thousand students and staff members to be tested every week.

Couple using same lottery numbers for 26 years wins jackpot
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A North Carolina husband and wife who have been playing the same set of lottery numbers for 26 years have won more than $366,000. Terry Coggeshall claimed the prize Thursday at the headquarters of the North Carolina Education Lottery in Raleigh. He says the lucky numbers had gotten him and his wife close to winning a few times, but they never thought they would take home the Cash 5 jackpot. The odds of winning were 1 in 962,598. Coggeshall bought the winning ticket at a grocery store in Chapel Hill. He says the couple started playing the same set of numbers when they lived in Florida.

ELECTION 2020-PRESIDENT-NORTH CAROLINA
Donald Trump wins battleground state of North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – President Donald Trump has won the presidential battleground of North Carolina over Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Trump campaigned aggressively in North Carolina with in-person rallies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Biden frequently criticized Trump’s decision to hold those rallies and the president’s handling of the virus. Former President Barack Obama was the most recent Democrat to win North Carolina, in 2008. Biden’s campaign hoped the counting of as many as 116,000 mail-in absentee ballots in subsequent days would overwhelmingly swing in his favor, but he fell short. Regardless, Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania on Saturday propelled him past the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the election.

ELECTION 2020-NORTH CAROLINA-CLOSE RACES
Close race for N.C. chief justice likely headed to recount
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The election to lead North Carolina’s judicial branch faced a likely recount after county tallies showed an extremely close race between current state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley and challenger Paul Newby. Canvassed results reported Friday from most of the counties show the Democrat Beasley and Republican Newby neck and neck after nearly 5.4 million votes cast in the race were counted. Recounts can occur if the trailing candidate is behind by 10,000 votes or less. The county results also confirmed victories for Republican Phil Berger Jr. to the Supreme Court and for two Democrats who beat state House Republicans.

HOUSE-MINORITY LEADER
N.C. state Rep. Jackson won’t seek to remain minority leader
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The leader of North Carolina’s state House Democrats says he won’t seek reelection to the post for the upcoming session. Wake County Rep. Darren Jackson has served as minority leader for the past four years. But he said disappointing election results in his chamber for the Democrats and life changes contributed to his decision to step aside. Democrats had hopes of taking back a majority in the House for the first time since 2010, but they actually lost seats overall. Democratic Caucus deputy leader Robert Reives of Chatham County says he’ll be a candidate for minority leader.
