INTEREST IN NEWS WANES AFTER A TUMULTUOUS 2020
NEW YORK (AP) – The latest news on how many people watch and read news is bad news for those who do news. Numbers indicate a decline in America’s appetite for keeping up with current events. For example, cable news networks were the main form of evening entertainment last year. But that isn’t so this year. Nielsen reports weekday prime-time viewership fell 38% at CNN, 34% at Fox News Channel – and 25% at MSNBC. Though not as steep as the cable drop, viewership for broadcast TV evening newscasts is down, too. Newspapers like the New York Times and Washington Post saw large increases in subscriptions during the Trump era. But Comscore reports the number of unique visitors to the Post site is now down 44% – and 34% at the Times.
