“SPACE JAM” KILLS OFF “BLACK WIDOW” AT BOX OFFICE
UNDATED (AP) – “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is a big winner in its first weekend of release. And its box office triumph over “Black Widow” is being seen as an upset. The movie featuring LeBron James, Bugs Bunny and the “Space Jam” Tune Squad earned $31.7 million over the weekend while “Black Widow” took in $26.3 million. It’s fair to say no one saw this coming. “Space Jam” got poor reviews and wasn’t expected to earn more than $20 million in its debut weekend. But many families and millennials who grew up with the original showed up at the theaters for the sequel – even though it’s currently streaming for free on HBO Max.
“TITANE” WINS PALME D’OR AT CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
UNDATED (AP) – A bit of history was made at the Cannes Film Festival this year. For only the second time ever, a woman has won the top prize. Julia Ducournau won the prestigious Palme d’Or with “Titane,” a horror film that features a scene in which a woman is impregnated by a Cadillac. There was also a little “La La Land” thingy at the closing event. Jury president Spike Lee was supposed to name the winning film at the end of the ceremony. But he let the cat out the bag at the very beginning, surprising Ducournau and ruining the suspense. Lee buried his head in his hands when he realized his error.

ANTHONY BOURDAIN DOCUMENTARY CRITICIZED FOR USE OF VOICE CLONING
UNDATED (AP) – The new documentary about Anthony Bourdain has gotten good reviews for how it tells the story about the late food expert. But it’s also being panned for using voice-cloning software to make Bourdain “say” words he never actually spoke. Director Morgan Neville told The New Yorker that one clip used AI to have Bourdain’s voice say something he had only written while alive. This has sparked new debate about the use of voice-cloning technology – in the entertainment world and in politics.
