CMT PLANS TRIBUTE SPECIAL FOR CHARLEY PRIDE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Garth Brooks, Darius Rucker and Reba McEntire are among the acts who will pay tribute to Charley Pride in a CMT special next month. Others who will appear include Mickey Guyton, Alan Jackson, Luke Combs, Wynonna, Lee Ann Womack, Gladys Knight, Jimmie Allen, Neal McCoy, Ronnie Milsap and George Strait. Pride’s son, Dion, will perform, and Pride’s wife, Rozene, will share memories. Pride died in December. The 90-minute special will air on CMT on Aug. 25.
SEX PISTOLS ARE IN COURT IN DISAGREEMENT OVER SONG LICENSES
LONDON (AP) – A court case will continue next week in a dispute among the members of the Sex Pistols over using their music in a TV series. Film director Danny Boyle, of “Trainspotting” and “Slumdog Millionaire” fame, is creating a TV series called “Pistol,” based on a memoir by guitarist Steve Jones. Jones and drummer Paul Cook want the series to use Sex Pistols songs. They say the band made an agreement in 1998 that “majority rules” on decisions regarding licensing their music. Singer John Lydon, AKA Johnny Rotten, says their music cannot be licensed without his consent.
JEFF LABAR OF CINDERELLA DIES
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Cinderella guitarist Jeff Labar has died at the age of 58, according to his management. Details on his death were not given. Labar joined Cinderella in 1983. Their hits include “Nobody’s Fool” in 1986 and “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” in 1988. The surviving members of Cinderella say in a statement that the memories of creating music and touring the world with their “brother” Labar will be with them forever.
R. KELLY PERMITTED TO DROP LAWYERS FROM LEGAL TEAM
NEW YORK (AP) – A judge overseeing R. Kelly’s upcoming trial in New York is allowing Kelly to shake up his legal team, less than a month before the trial begins. U.S District Judge Ann Donnelly has granted a request from attorneys Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard to drop out of case. They had been Kelly’s top attorneys, but they had a falling-out with other lawyers on Kelly’s team. Kelly will face sex-trafficking charges at the trial that begins Aug. 9 in Brooklyn federal court. He also faces sex abuse charges in Illinois and Minnesota. Kelly denies abusing anyone.
MADONNA’S “MADAME X” CONCERT WILL BE RELEASED THIS FALL
NEW YORK (AP) – Madonna says her Madame X persona is “finally ready to disturb the peace.” Her concert documentary “Madame X” will debut on the Paramount Plus streaming service on Oct. 8. The concert was filmed in Lisbon, Portugal, with Madonna appearing on stage with 48 performers.
TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND EMBRACE TOURING AGAIN
RIDGEFIELD, Conn. (AP) – The Tedeschi (teh-DES’-kee) Trucks Band has the best audiences at their concerts that they’ve ever had, because virtually everyone who attends is glad to be there. Guitarist Derek Trucks says there’s a lot of gratitude coming from the stage, and a lot coming to the stage. He says he can look out and tell who is at a concert for the first time since the pandemic locked everything down, because “there’s a big long exhale and a lot of joy.” Today, the Tedeschi Trucks band release “Layla Revisited,” their live remake of the Derek and the Dominos album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.”
FOO FIGHTERS DELAY LA FORUM CONCERT
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Foo Fighters’ concert tomorrow that was supposed to be the first full-capacity event at the Los Angeles Forum since the pandemic began has been postponed. The band say in a statement there has been a confirmed COVID-19 case within the Foo Fighters organization. Out of an abundance of caution, they have postponed the show until a date yet to be named.
