HIP-HOP MUSEUM BREAKS GROUND IN NEaW YORK
NEW YORK (AP) – Ground has been broken at the future site of the Universal Hip Hop Museum. It happened yesterday in the South Bronx, the birthplace of the music and culture that started on the gritty streets of the New York City borough – and became a global force. Among the musicians present for the event were Nas, LL Cool J and Fat Joe. The museum is part of a $349 million project along the South Bronx waterfront.

 

ROGER HAWKINS, DRUMMER FOR “THE SWAMPERS,” DIES
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) – The original drummer for The Swampers is dead. The Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama says Roger Hawkins died at 75 after a long illness. Hawkins was in what’s officially called the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section – a group immortalized when it was hailed in the Lynyrd Skynyrd song, “Sweet Home Alabama.” Hawkins drummed on “Respect Yourself,” “When A Man Loves A Woman,” “Chain of Fools” and “I’ll Take You There.” The Swampers played on hundreds of songs, including those by Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Paul Simon, James Brown and Alicia Keys.

 

GARTH BROOKS, JOAN BAEZ FETED AS RECIPIENT OF KENNEDY CENTER HONORS
WASHINGTON (AP) – It wasn’t the usual hoopla that comes with getting a Kennedy Center Honor. But, despite not having public ceremonies, the latest crop of performers have received their tributes. The musicians honored this year are Garth Brooks and Joan Baez, who met with President Joe Biden at the White House yesterday.

 

RADIO HOST WHO BLASTED DEMI LOVATO’S NON-BINARY STATUS BACK AT WORK
BOSTON (AP) – Well, that didn’t take long. The longtime Boston radio host who quit after being ordered by his bosses to stop mocking Demi Lovato is back on the job. Matty Siegel returned yesterday for his AM show. Defending his meltdown, Siegel says he “snapped” when his iHeartMedia bosses told him to stop ranting about how Lovato now identifies as non-binary. Siegel, who’s 71, denies his walkout was a publicity stunt.
