‘TARZAN’ ACTOR RON ELY’S WIFE AND SON KILLED
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say “Tarzan” actor Ron Ely’s (EE’-leez) wife was stabbed to death in their Southern California home by the couple’s son, who police subsequently shot to death.
A Santa Barbara County sheriff’s statement Wednesday said deputies found 62-year-old Valerie Lundeen Ely dead with multiple stab wounds inside the house on Tuesday night.
The statement says deputies identified the suspect as the couple’s son, 30-year-old Cameron Ely, who was found outside the house after a search.
Authorities say after an unspecified threat, four deputies fired on Cameron Ely and he was killed.
There was no report of the 81-year-old Ron Ely being injured. An earlier sheriff’s statements said an elderly man from the home was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Ron Ely starred in a “Tarzan” TV series on NBC from 1966 to 1968.
JOJO RABBIT DIRECTOR FELT SHAME DRESSING AS HITLER FOR MOVIE
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The director of the new film “Jojo Rabbit” says he felt shame and embarrassment when he had to dress as Adolf Hitler for the movie.
Taika Waititi plays the murderous dictator in the satire about a young boy whose imaginary friend is Hitler. Waititi says although it troubled him to dress as Hitler, he realized he could control the depiction of him and enjoyed ridiculing him with his performance.
Some of the cast felt troubled at the sight of Waititi as Hitler as well. “Game of Thrones” star Alfie Allen called it an “arresting image” and says Waititi had to reel back his emotions while directing because it was frightening for people.
The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell.
The movie is being released across the United States on Friday.
PAUL RUDD PLAYS A MAN WITH A CLONE IN “LIVING WITH YOURSELF”
LONDON (AP) – If Paul Rudd had a clone, he’d leave the heavy lifting to the clone and go travel.
The closest he can get, though, is his new Netflix comedy series, “Living With Yourself.” Rudd plays a tired guy named Miles who, unbeknownst to him, is cloned into a more upbeat Miles, who seems better than the original.
Rudd says the one thing everyone wants is more time.
No time to watch another series? Rudd says that’s the great thing about “Living With Yourself” — “there’s only eight of them and they’re short.”
“Living With Yourself” premieres tomorrow.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Television powerhouse Shonda Rhimes is moving aggressively into the burgeoning podcast world.
Rhimes’ company, Shondaland, said Wednesday that she will serve as executive producer for podcasts to be distributed by iHeartMedia.
Shondaland says it signed a three-year podcast deal with iHeartMedia and is launching Shondaland Audio.
In a statement, Rhimes said she welcomed the opportunity to expand Shondaland’s storytelling into the growing medium, which she praised for a unique sense of boldness and intimacy.
Shondaland has already ventured into podcasting with the weekly “Katie’s Crib,” in which actress Katie Lowe discusses motherhood with guests.
Rhimes, who became an ABC network mainstay with hits including “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” signed an exclusive deal with Netflix in 2017 to produce new programs for the streaming service.
JURY TO DECIDE ON DEATH SENTENCE FOR ‘BOY NEXT DOOR KILLER’
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A Los Angeles jury has started deliberating whether a man prosecutors have dubbed “The Boy Next Door Killer” will get a sentence of death or life in prison for the killings of two women and the attempted murder of a third.
Closing arguments ended Wednesday in the penalty phase of the trial of 43-year-old Michael Gargiulo.
The jury in August convicted Gargiulo of the killings including the 2001 murder of Ashley Ellerin on a night she was to go out with actor Ashton Kutcher, who testified at the trial.
Surviving victim Michelle Murphy testified during the penalty phase that for years she lived in fear after the attack.
Gargiulo’s 16-year-old son also took the stand during the penalty phase and asked that jurors spare his father’s life.
Prosecutors assigned Gargiulo the “Boy Next Door Killer” moniker because he lived near all the victims.
NETFLIX’S US SUBSCRIBER GROWTH SLOWING AS COMPETITION LOOMS
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Netflix’s subscriber growth is bogging down even before the leading video streaming service confronts high-powered threats from Apple and Walt Disney Co.
The latest sign of the challenges facing Netflix emerged Wednesday with the release of its third-quarter results. The numbers provided further evidence that Netflix’s salad days may be over, particularly in the U.S., where most households that want the 12-year-old streaming service already have it.
Netflix added 6.8 million subscribers worldwide from July through September, below the 7 million customers forecast by the Los Gatos, California, company. Just 520,000 of those subscribers were picked up in the U.S., below the 800,000 that management anticipated. The shortfall came after Netflix lost 123,000 subscribers in the U.S. during the April-June period, marking its first contraction in eight years.
