COMEDIAN TIM CONWAY OF ‘THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW’ DIES AT 85
NEW YORK (AP) – Tim Conway, the stellar second banana to Carol Burnett who won four Emmy Awards on her TV variety show, has died, according to his publicist. He was 85. Conway died Tuesday morning after a long illness in Los Angeles, according to Howard Bragman, who heads LaBrea Media. “The Carol Burnett Show” aired on CBS from 1967-1978. The ensemble cast included Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner. Conway joined the cast as a regular in 1975 after being a frequent guest. Besides his four Emmys with Burnett, Conway got two more for guest appearances on “Coach” and “30 Rock.” Conway also had a modest but steady movie career, appearing in such films as “The Apple Dumpling Gang.”

ABC: CONSTANCE WU’S ‘FRESH OFF THE BOAT’ JOB SAFE AFTER RANT
NEW YORK (AP) – ABC’s entertainment president says “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu’s job is safe despite her online rant. The “Crazy Rich Asians” star posted an expletive-filled lament last week when the comedy’s renewal was announced. No thought was given to recasting Wu’s role as the sitcom’s mom, network executive Karey Burke told a teleconference Tuesday. Burke said she’s choosing to believe Wu’s most recent comment, that she’s happy to return to “Fresh Off the Boat.” Wu has apologized for what she called “insensitive” comments and said she loves the sitcom. She said she was temporarily frustrated that it would keep her from working on a passion project. Burke said she knew Wu had another opportunity if the show ended, but ABC always intended to renew it for a sixth season.

WITHOUT LUKE PERRY, ‘BEVERLY HILLS, 90210’ CAST PREPS REBOOT
NEW YORK (AP) – At an event promoting the upcoming slate of Fox shows, the cast of the “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot remembered their castmate Luke Perry, who died earlier this year. Entitled “BH90210,” the new show isn’t a continuation of the series. Having gone their separate ways after the series ended nearly 20 years ago, the actors return as heightened versions of themselves. Jason Priestly says not having Perry be part of the new show is hard: “Obviously it’s very difficult to do this without him.” The new show is set for a summer debut.

TIFFANY HADDISH TO HOST ABC’S ‘KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS’
NEW YORK (AP) – ABC’s fall schedule will include a reboot of the TV variety series “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” hosted by Tiffany Haddish. ABC said Tuesday the comedian-actress will produce the series, set to air on Sundays. Haddish will encourage children to share their advice on topics including dating and sportsmanship, the network said. ABC also will launch another spinoff of its comedy “black-ish” this fall. Titled “mixed-ish,” the spinoff will focus on the preteen version of the mom that Tracee Ellis Ross plays on “black-ish.” The young Rainbow, nicknamed Bow, faces the challenges of growing up in the 1980s as part of a mixed-ethnicity family, ABC said. Two other new shows on ABC’s fall schedule: “Stumptown,” based on the graphic novels, and “Emergence,” described as a character-driven thriller.

MADONNA REBUFFS ISRAEL EUROVISION BOYCOTT CALLS
JERUSALEM (AP) – Pop star Madonna has rejected calls for her to boycott this year’s Eurovision song contest in Israel, saying she will “never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda.” Madonna issued a statement on Tuesday, ahead of her expected arrival in Tel Aviv for a performance at the Eurovision event. Madonna said her “heart breaks every time I hear about the innocent lives that are lost in this region and the violence that is so often perpetuated to suit the political goals of people who benefit from this ancient conflict.” She says she prays for “a new path toward peace.” The Palestinian-led boycott movement against Israel has urged artists to skip this week’s Eurovision in Tel Aviv. In a statement, it accused Madonna of “artwashing” and urged her to cancel.

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL SET TO OPEN WITH ZOMBIE COMEDY
CANNES, France (AP) – The 72nd Cannes Film Festival is set to open Tuesday with the premiere of Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy “The Dead Don’t Die” and the introduction of Alejandro Inarritu’s jury. This year’s Cannes arrives with the usual swirl of celebrity and controversy. Debuting at the French film festival will be Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and the Elton John biopic “Rocketman.” Last year’s Cannes saw 82 women protest for gender inequality on the festival’s famed red-carpet steps. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux signed a pledge promising to make the festival’s selection process more transparent and to push executive boards toward gender parity. On Tuesday, Fremaux said Cannes is progressing in step with the industry. Inarritu will preside over the jury that will decide this year’s Palme d’Or.

The companies announced Tuesday a partnership that designates Caesars as the network’s official odds data supplier on TV and digital platforms. The companies say Caesars’ data and branding will be added to ESPN’s programming in the coming weeks. ESPN has also agreed to build a studio at the Caesars-owned Linq casino-resort in Las Vegas. This isn’t Caesars’ first deal since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports betting a year ago. It previously announced a Bleacher Report-branded studio will be built inside Caesars Palace casino-resort.
