JIMMY PAGE RECALLS TESTING ROBERT PLANT

CORONA, Calif. (AP) – If Robert Plant had rejected Jimmy Page’s ideas for the song “Dazed and Confused,” Plant might not have been the singer for Led Zeppelin. Page says he wanted to give Plant a try because he thought he had “an interesting range.” Page played him a version of “Dazed and Confused” that The Yardbirds had recorded. Page says it was radical for the time to have acoustic and electric guitars and that kind of orchestration. He says if Plant had rejected that, Page would have looked for someone else. He also tested Plant with a version of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” that turned out so well, that’s how they did it on the first Led Zeppelin album.

CAREY, HYNDE, GILL AMONG SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME NOMINEES

NEW YORK (AP) – Mariah Carey, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill and Mike Love of The Beach Boys are nominees for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So are Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, Lloyd Price and Tommy James. Missy Elliott has been nominated, and if chosen, would be the first female rapper inducted and only the third rapper ever, after Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri. Several non-performing songwriters are nominated as well. The hall members will vote through Dec. 17. Six nominees will be chosen for induction at a ceremony in New York in June.

GET TO KNOW H.E.R.

NEW YORK (AP) – H.E.R. (HER) hid her face and details on her life so people would listen to the music. She says people tend to listen with their eyes, and many people would not have accepted her music if they knew she was 19 when she released her first EP. H.E.R., who’s 21 now, says she didn’t want hype, nor did she want people to love her music because of what she looks like or who she knows. She’s more open about showing herself now because she feels she’s accepted now. What about that male singer who’s releasing music as H.I.M.? She says, “I don’t like to acknowledge it.”

NASHVILLE (AP) – Chris Janson was broke and playing for tips when he first moved to Nashville. His tips skyrocketed when he started playing harmonica. Janson says he got one from Cracker Barrel and to this day he cannot say how to play it. He plays by ear and he says he is “100 percent riffing.” Janson says fans will ask him for tips on playing harmonica and he has no idea what to say. His advice: “If they want to get book smart, go to school.”
