“SONIC THE HEDGEHOG” WINS BOX OFFICE RACE
NEW YORK (AP) – When the first trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog” was released months ago, it was trashed on social media. But it’s Paramount Pictures that is now having the last laugh. The movie has made its debut at the top of the box office list, taking in $57 million in its first weekend. It’s also the highest opening weekend for a movie adapted from a video game. Finishing second over the weekend was “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” with $17.1 million, followed by “Fantasy Island,” “The Photograph” and “Bad Boys for Life.”

“PARASITE” GETS ONE OF THE BIGGEST POST-OSCAR BOOSTS EVER
NEW YORK (AP) – A week ago, “Parasite” was basking in glory after becoming the first foreign-language film to win the Oscar for best picture. Now, it’s celebrating another milestone. After the movie was released into more than 2,000 theaters over the weekend, it saw one of the largest post-Oscars bumps for a best-picture winner. “Parasite” took in $5.5 million over the weekend, rivaling “Gladiator,” which won in 2001. What makes “Parasite’s haul even more impressive is that the Bong Joon Ho movie has already been released on DVD and in digital form.

BONG JOON-HO RETURNS TO SOUTH KOREA
INCHEON, South Korea (AP) – It was quite the homecoming for movie director Bong Joon-ho. He smiled and waved at a large crowd waiting for him as he returned to South Korea, a week after making history at the Academy Awards. He was applauded and cheered as he left the arrivals gate at Incheon International Airport. He told fans he’s happy his journey to the United States “wrapped up nicely. And he says he wants to return to creating movies, which he calls his “main occupation.” Last Sunday, Bong’s “Parasite” won four Oscars, including best picture – the first foreign-language movie to take the coveted prize.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN RAPE TRIAL TAKES HOLIDAY OFF
NEW YORK (AP) – Depending on what a New York City jury decides, this could be Harvey Weinstein’s last weekend of freedom for a long time. When his rape trial resumes tomorrow after a three-day holiday weekend, the panel will start mulling his fate. Prosecutors and defense attorneys presented their closing arguments last week. Weinstein is charged with raping a woman in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on another woman in 2006. He claims any sexual contact he had was consensual.

KANDI BURRUSS LAMENTS SHOOTING AT HER ATLANTA-AREA EATERY
EAST POINT, Ga. (AP) – “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss says a shooting at one of her Atlanta-area restaurants doesn’t reflect the kind of values the eatery promotes. Three people were wounded in the gunplay at her Old Lady Gang restaurant in East Point, Georgia Friday night. Police say all three victims are expected to survive – and the search for the shooter continues. In an Instagram post, Burruss says she and her family “are truly saddened” by the crime. Burruss has been a cast member on “RHOA” since 2009. She became famous in the 1990s as a member of the R&B group Xscape. She also won a Grammy for Best R&B song for the TCL hit, “No Scrubs.”

ACTRESS LYNN COHEN DIES
NEW YORK (AP) – The actress who played the housekeeper and nanny Magda in “Sex and the City” has died. Her manager says Lynn Cohen died Friday in New York – but gave no further details. She was 86. Cohen had a wide range of credits in movies, TV and on the stage. Among her more notable appearances were in the TV shows “Nurse Jackie” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” as well as in one of “The Hunger Games” movies – and of course, in both the TV and movie versions of “Sex and the City.”

KOBE BRYANT LAUDED, MOURNED AT NBA ALL-STAR GAME
CHICAGO (AP) – It was a time for tears and tributes for Kobe Bryant as the NBA held its All-Star Game yesterday. The event in Chicago was the first league-wide event since Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others died in a helicopter crash last month. Jennifer Hudson, wearing Lakers’ purple, did a pregame music tribute. Players on one team wore Bryant’s No. 24 on their jerseys, while players on the other team wore No. 2, the number his daughter Gianna wore. Both teams wore a patch with nine stars, one for each crash victim. And the game’s top player, Kawhi Leonard, is first recipient of the Kobe Bryant MVP Award, which the NBA rechristened after Bryant’s death. Bryant was an All-Star Game MVP four times in his career.
