LOUISVILLE, Ky. – 12 Mountaineer softball players garnered National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete awards for the 2023 season.

Recognition from the NFCA requires that student-athletes post a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Following the hard work in the classroom and on the diamond this past spring semester, App State extended its streak of having a double-digit number of players named to the NFCA’s academic list.

Anna Carson, Kaley Coltrain, Kapri Toone and Taylor Thorp posted a perfect 4.0 GPA and helped lead the team to an overall GPA of 3.37 for the 2023 academic year.

Academic recognition is nothing new to the Mountaineers and head coach Shelly Hoerner. In 2022, App State softball had 11 athletes named Scholar-Athletes by the NFCA. Kayt Houston, Taylor Thorp and Kylie LaRousa have been recognized in back-to-back years as NFCA scholar-athletes.

The 2023 season saw App State have success in both the classroom and on the field as the Mountaineers won its first game against a ranked opponent in program history after beating No. 23 Louisiana on the road in March and tallying a series victory over Sun Belt foe Georgia State in April.
