BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women’s basketball will face eighth-seeded Arkansas State on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. (ET) in the first round of the 2018 Sun Belt Championship held in New Orleans at Lakefront Arena.
The Mountaineers finished the season at 7-21 and 5-13 in conference play. Appalachian knew before the weekend that it would be in the 8/9 game, but was awaiting its opponent for Tuesday. After Saturday, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina, and Arkansas State each finished with identical 10-8 league records. Comparing the composite records of the tied teams only shows Louisiana with a 3-0 record against CCU and A-State. CCU is 1-2 and A-State is 1-3. Therefore, Louisiana earned the No. 6 seed. With only two teams remaining, CCU and A-State move to a two-team tiebreaker. Head-to-head, the teams split the season series, so we look at their winning percentage against Little Rock, the highest seed. Both teams dropped games to Little Rock this season so we move onto No. 2 Texas State. CCU split with Texas State while A-State dropped its only matchup with Texas State. Therefore, CCU earned the No. 7 seed and A-State earned the No. 8 seed (Via Sun Belt).
For the third time in the past four seasons since App joined the Sun Belt, the Mountaineers and Red Wolves meet for the third time in the opening round. App is 0-2 against A-State in the tournament with the Red Wolves as either the No. 1 or 2 seed in both instances. Appalachian is 1-3 all-time in the Sun Belt Tournament with the lone win coming in the first round last season against Coastal Carolina, 79-58.
Appalachian and Arkansas State split the season series as each team won on its home floor, while the Red Wolves boast a 6-5 edge in the series. However, App State has won three of the past four meetings.
