NORFOLK, VA. – Appalachian State softball swept the Norfolk State Spartans with two wins, bringing their win streak to four games. The last time the Mountaineers had a four-game win streak was Feb. 6 – March 4, 2017.
Game One (W, 7-1)
Keri White led off the first inning with a hit dropped in shallow right field. White was the first run across the plate for the Mountaineers on a passed ball with two outs after advancing to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Sidney Russell and a groundout from Alisha Josey.
Norfolk State tied up the score at 1-1 with a solo home run from Jazzmaine Hammond in the bottom of the second inning.
In the fourth inning, Baylee Morton drew a walk and Ally Walters reached on a fielder’s choice to put Gabby Buruato, pinch runner for Morton, in scoring position. Megan Walker singled to left field before Avery Wheatley pounded a single up the middle to score Walters, the second run for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers scored another five runs in the top of the seventh inning. A. Josey drove in both runners, Avery Wheatley and Sidney Russell, with a double to the left field fence to bring the score 4-1. Jenny Dodd drew a walk before Baylee Morton crushed a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Game Two (W, 6-3)
The Apps’ first run came in the top of the third inning. Walker reached first base on an error by the second baseman but ran into an out at second base on a fielder’s choice for Wheatley. White singled through the right side to bring Wheatley around to third base. White stole second base to put both runners in scoring position. On a throw to first base to get Laura Sales out, Wheatley scored.
Norfolk State scored in the bottom of the third inning after two walks and a fielding error by Wheatley at shortstop.
The Mountaineer offense exploded in the eighth inning. The Apps scored five runs on four hits in an international tiebreaker with Walker placed on second base to start the inning. Kayla Fredendall pinch hit for Laura Sales and stepped up big for the Mountaineers, hitting a two-RBI single to right field. Fredendall’s hit sparked a single from A. Josey up the middle followed by a three-run homer from Dodd, her fourth of the season and fourth in three games.
Norfolk State scored two in the bottom of the eighth inning off of a double to right field and a single to left center, but it was not enough to overcome the Mountaineers.
Both Julianna Roupas and Katie Williford ended five straight innings striking out the batters for the final outs. Roupas and Williford combined only allowed three hits from the Spartans, throwing a no-hitter through six innings and the first two outs of the seventh. Williford had five strikeouts, and Roupas had two for seven total. Williford earned the win throwing 5-2/3 innings for the Mountaineers.
