A Mountaineer Impact Reaches $30 Million Mark

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State Athletics is proud to announce that A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive for Excellence is halfway to its goal of raising $60 million to support the growth of the athletics department.

The initiative, which was publicly announced in February 2017, was designed to impact every App State student-athlete and sports program. The objectives of A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive for Excellence are to construct and enhance athletic facilities, provide critical scholarship support, impact the overall athletic experience for student-athletes and fans, and strengthen campus and community engagement.

As of April 17, 2018, cash and commitments exceeding $30 million have been given toward the initiative, including 55 gift commitments of $10,000 or more.

Since Director of Athletics Doug Gillin arrived in early 2015, the value of App State scholarship endowments has grown by $1.4 million and is well on its way to the departmental goal of $10 million.

“For Appalachian to continue to develop a comprehensively excellent athletics program that is representative of our great university, continued support is critical,” Gillin said. “The faithful generosity of our long-time donors and the new interest we’re receiving throughout our fan base and alumni base makes me excited for the future of App State Athletics. It’s the support of those giving to A Mountaineer Impact that is enabling us to move forward with design of the new end zone facility and upgrades in facilities across our sports. We are also able to provide more scholarship support and academic opportunities to our student-athletes, who are the lifeblood of college athletics and the reason we are all here.”

Progress in facility upgrades and scholarship endowments has already been made since the launch of the initiative.

In August, new state-of-the-art videoboards were installed at the Holmes Convocation Center and Kidd Brewer Stadium. The board at Kidd Brewer is the largest of its kind among Group of Five conferences. The design phase is underway for the $38.2 million end zone project that will be a centerpiece of the newly named Mark E. Ricks Athletics Complex. Upgrades to volleyball, field hockey and wrestling facilities have already begun or will begin soon.

“We are thrilled with the momentum that has been gained throughout the Mountaineer Impact initiative, thanks to the generous support from so many families and individuals across App Nation,” said Brian Tracy, senior associate athletics director for external affairs. “We are continuing to receive new interest in leadership giving as folks want to be part of what is happening in App State Athletics. It’s a special time to be involved with this great family.”
